Levafluke is an anthelmintic drug of levamisole hydrochloride and oxyclozanide which acts against fasciola and nematodes. Learn more about Levafluke Suspension and get the chance to eradicate the parasitic infection affecting your farm.

Composition:

Each 1 ml of Levafluke Suspension contains:
Levamisole hydrochloride ….30 mg.
Oxyclozanide ……………………………60 mg.

Properties:

Levafluke suspension is a broad spectrum anthelmintic combination contains levamisole hydrochloride as antinematoda and oxyclozanide as a fasciolicide in suspension form. Levamisole is the L isomer of dl-tetramisole.

It has a paralysing action on nematodes. The paralysis is due to sustained muscle contraction. Levamisole acts as a ganglion stimulant (cholinomimetic).

Oxyclozanide is a salicylanilide with specific activity against adult liver flukes.

Its mode of action is based on alteration of phosphorylase link in energy metabolism of worm, and may also inhibit fumarate reductase activity.

Indications:

Levafluke suspension is indicated for the treatment of the following:
Parasitic gastro-enteritis caused by; Haemonchus spp., Ostertagia spp. (including type II Ostertagiasis), Trichostrongylus spp., Cooperia spp., Bunostomum spp. and Oesophagostomum spp. sensitive to levamisole in cattle and sheep.

Parasitic bronchitis caused by Dictyocaulus viviparous sensitive to levamisole in cattle and D. filaria sensitive to levamisole in sheep.

Fascioliasis caused by adult Fasciola hepatica and F. gigantica sensitive to oxyclozanide in cattle
and sheep.

Dosage & administration:

Cattle & sheep : 2.5 ml of Levafluke / 10 kg b.wt to be given orally as a drench as a single dose.
Shake well before use.

Warning:

– Operators should wear suitable protective clothing as levamisole may cause idiosyncratic reactions and serious blood disorders in a small number of people. Seek medical advice immediately if dizziness, nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, sore mouth or throat, or fever occur.
– Use cautiously or preferably delay use in cattle under stress.

Contra-indication:

– Don’t use Levafluke suspension for dairy cattle or sheep producing milk for human consumption.
– Don’t use Levafluke suspension within 14 days of treatment with organophosphorus compounds or diethylcarbamazine.
– Don’t use Levafluke suspension in concurrent with pyrantel, morantel, neostigmine or chloramphenicol.

Side-effects:

– Adverse effects that may be seen in cattle can include muzzle-foaming or hypersalivation, excitement or trembling, lip-licking and head shaking.
– These effects are generally noted with higher than recommended doses or if levamisole is used concomitantly with organophosphates.
– In sheep, levamisole may cause a transient excitability in some animals after dosing.
– At 25 mg/ kg oxyclozanide dose levels, animals may show softening of the faeces, increased frequency of defecation, slight depression and inappetence.
